Choosing the “right” thing.
Sorry I missed ya last week!
We’ve been hard at work finishing up our house to be rented, and getting things ready to hit the road. This whole journey is a fun one, but I must admit I’m excited to get past these projects đ
Next up will be the fun part â getting the van ready to roll!
Anyway… let’s get into today’s topic!
The “Right Thing”
Today I want to talk about working on the âright thing.â
This is something that has held me back a lot in the past, and continues to limit me each day.
It can be a tough feeling wondering if what youâre working on is worthwhile. How can we know for sure that the project, job, or business youâre working on is EXACTLY what you should be doing?
The reality is this:
… We will never know exactly, and frankly, it doesnât always matter.
Something > Nothing
The terms Iâve come to with myself is the fact that progress is progress. Working on SOMETHING is always going to be better than doing nothing. Wrong action is better than inaction due to overthinking.
Even today, I question what exactly I should be putting my time towards. There are several âgoodâ ideas that come to my mind each day, and it seems like all of them fight for my time and attention.
How can I ever know what is the right thing to do?
This is a paralyzing question for most people. Looking at your options from a big picture view often allows for clarity in decision making.
Among your available optionsâŠ
- What will matter in 1 year? What will matter in 5 years?
- What aligns with your morals?
- What means the most to you?
- What would you like to be âknownâ for?
- What has the most long-term earning potential?
- What are you actually gifted in, or passionate about?
Answer these questions given your options. What 1-2 specific things stand out among the rest?
Action = Progress
The truth is that progress is progress, regardless of which direction youâre heading. Nearly any sort of experience or expertise can be applied in some area of your journey.
Even if you choose the âwrongâ direction initially, the things you learn from that area can be applied in the next phase of life.
The only wasted time is time spent wondering.
Taking action, even if it is 180 degrees in the âwrongâ direction, is still creating more momentum than standing still.
As they often say â you canât steer a parked car. The wheels need to be spinning in order to get to any destination.
Even if you donât know where to start. Even if you know this isnât your âforeverâ thing. Even if you are afraid itâs not perfect⊠just get started.
You WILL learn something along the way that you can apply further down the road.
The failures or mistakes you encounter? They become fantastic learning opportunities and testimonials for your own story, and only make things more interesting.
Your story is, and can be unique, only if you take risks and explore many different areas of interests.
Iâve never met an interesting, nor successful person that hasnât tried MANY different things. No one succeeds on their first attempt at something. Thatâs just not how it works.
Get out there and try something new today. Make a mistake. Prove yourself wrong.
