Scare the heck out of yourself!

Today I want to talk about doing things that scare you.

In fact – maybe even something that feels terrifying right now.

I often hear that getting outside of your comfort zone is crucial in life. To succeed, to meet friends, to make connections, to find relationships… in all aspects of life.

But does getting out of your comfort zone always have to scare the daylights out of you?!

Do It Scared

For me personally – I’ve found that it most certainly does. Whether I like it or not!

Scaring the heck out of myself has essentially been the theme for my life this past year. And trust me, it doesn’t always feel good!

But… what I’ve learned from doing these things has changed everything.

Something that I have been working on learning this year is this:

Doing something scary or uncomfortable will result in one of two things…

  1. An awkward situation that you AND others will soon forget about. (People don’t think about you as much as you think)
  2. An amazing situation that you are so glad that you decided to pursue. (The discomfort quickly turns to joy)

And time and time again this proves to be true. I honestly am always seeking to test this theory out, and I encourage you to do the same!

Each time I find myself in a scenario that I feel uncomfortable, I think about these two outcomes mentioned above. It always helps me to decide to go for it – because the benefit almost always outweighs the “awkward” situation that you will forget about.

Benefit > Discomfort

What things currently terrify you, that you could potentially benefit from?

Here are a few ideas:

  • Reaching out to a potential mentor, colleague, friend
  • Attending a local meetup (for your niche, interest, passion, etc)
  • Attending a new church
  • Taking a trip to a new place
  • Moving to a new city/town
  • Learning a new skill (or gaining new experience)
  • Asking someone for help
  • Sharing your ideas or creations

What have you been holding back from that feels scary? This is your sign to give it a go!

Moving into a van (a 35 year old one at that) and traveling around the country certainly didn’t always feel easy or comfortable for me. There were so many times that it felt “right” to just stay where we were.

It was the easy thing to stay in an area that we knew. But with every mile that we strayed outside of our comfort zone, somehow things began to feel more peaceful. Often times it continues to feel scary – but it also feels right. And I’m grateful for that.

Always choose the difficult path. Your best views lie on the other side of a scary decision.
