The avenue of authenticity
We all have a story to tell.
The good. The bad. The ugly.
We all experience highs and lows, wins and losses, trials and errors.
No matter where you are on your journey, there are thousands of people who can relate to exactly what you’re experiencing.
It’s our duty to share this story with the world.
The Avenue of Authenticity
Sharing your personal journey isn’t always easy. It’s uncomfortable – and even embarrassing.
It’s easy to pretend we have it “all figured out” as we try to impress our friends, family, and strangers. But what if your superpower lies in the ability to share with honesty… regardless of the truth?
Being vulnerable allows your audience to connect with you beyond the surface level. Instead of assuming that you never have any problems – your audience can see that you’re human just like everyone else.
The world needs more authenticity.
In fact, the world craves authenticity.
Unfortunately, the “authentic” side of the story is seldom told. Most people happily share the highlight reel of their lives, while fast-forwarding through the struggles in between.
But your power is found in the problems you solve.
Story = Credibility
When you see an incredible video online, find the creator’s profile and scroll down a couple years. I can guarantee that the videos they made two years ago weren’t nearly as impressive.
The same goes with any creative outlet.
You must be terrible before you become terrific. Your favorite artist started as a beginner.
They weren’t born this good. Where you see them today is a summary of years (often decades) of trial and error. Long before your discovery of this person, they were practicing their craft.
Your story begins when you find the courage to start sharing about it.
Be honest.
Be vulnerable.
Be descriptive.
When social media shows “everything is perfect all the time,” your vulnerability will be a breath of fresh air that people will be drawn to. Relating with someone on a similar level is far better than feeling envy towards someone else that is “more successful” than you are.
That comparison mindset drains you of your potential.
But seeing someone facing the same barrier gives you hope for overcoming it.
Build in Private to Become Impactful in Public
“But Eric, sharing my story with others is terrifying!”
Fortunately, you can start this journey in private. And it all begins with writing.
- Block out 30 minutes early in your morning routine
- Open up a notebook or your computer
- Document anything that’s on your mind
Do this DAILY!
You won’t believe what you might have bottled up that you didn’t even know existed. Frustrations, fears, strengths, weaknesses, ideas, and information will spring forth abundantly.
It’s an extremely effective exercise you must try. Learn more about my writing method here.
The act of writing will:
- increase your confidence
- help you overcome limiting beliefs
- unpack emotions, fears, and feelings
Do this long enough, and you’ll quickly realize the need for sharing these thoughts with others.
Eventually, you can share your story to your audience of 50, or 500,000. Telling your story will be beneficial regardless of who’s listening.
People will resonate with you specifically. They will picture themselves somewhere along your timeline, and be encouraged by the steps you took to move past that point.
Write, speak, and share like you’re talking to one specific person.
Because one person is all it takes to make an impact.
What do you have to share?
