Focus is your superpower.
Today I want to talk about the importance of focus.
More and more lately, it’s been resurfacing in my own life as an extremely important differentiation between progress and procrastination.
Without focus, our vision is blurry. Literally and figuratively.
Focus allows us to work on the things that matter, and overlook the distractions.
Focus & Priorities
I believe that focus goes hand in hand with your priorities.
Without priorities, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by which things to work on.
We see so many options, and can’t decide which thing is worth my time TODAY, TOMORROW or RIGHT NOW.
This has certainly been the case for me.
I’ve always been an “idea person,” meaning that I always have a ton of ideas of things that I could be working on at any given moment.
And with lack of focus, this always led to me spreading my time across too many things – feeling like nothing was getting accomplished.
The Paper Boat Race
It’s kinda like having 10 paper boats in the water, and each of them are racing to get to the finish line. The only way to propel them forward is to blow on them to get them there.
It’s going to take a long time for one of them to reach the finish line if I’m trying to push each one in even spurts.
Instead, if I focused on pushing one boat that I felt most strongly about – it would reach the finish line with ease, since it was my only focus. It was the only boat receiving my breath.
The same goes for our projects, time, and energy.
It can be difficult to decide which things are worth your time.
Trust me – I’ve been there too.
But when you do learn to invest in the things that you know are pushing you towards the right places, it finally feels like you’re making progress.
You reach that feeling of flow – where the things you knew would happen are coming to fruition as you plug away at what matters.
Removing Distractions
More and more, our focus is spread thin.
It’s easy to get distracted by the things that don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.
It’s overcoming and overlooking these distractions that allow us to put our time and energy towards the levers that allow us to make progress.
If “that thing” isn’t getting you closer to where you want to be – are you willing to recognize that and remove it from your life?
It’s a blessing to know WHAT you want.
It’s a blessing to know WHERE you want to go with it.
And it’s a blessing to know HOW to push towards this mission.
But this is all only possible WHEN you decide to focus.
Focus is what separates the unconventional from the masses.
Focus is what differentiates the creators from the consumers.
Focus is what allows for progress instead of procrastination.
